She also participated in many key battles-including Midway, Second Guadalcanal, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea-and came out unscathed. During World War II she supported the invasions of the Phillipines and Malaya. Atago had some stability issues due to her top-heavy design however, she was still able to make 35.5 knots, faster than most other heavy cruisers in service at the time. Designed as an evolution of the Myoko-class, the Atago was an extremely capable heavy cruiser armed with ten 8-inch guns and sixteen torpedoes that could be fired forward, unlike the Myoko. She was laid down at the Kure Naval Arsenal in April 1927 and completed in March 1932. Atago was a Japanese Takao-class heavy cruiser that served through many major battles in the Second World War.
